Come and learn in a pristine wilderness playground. The sheltered blue waters and mossy rainforests of Nootka Sound are the perfect place to ignite a lifelong passion for the great outdoors. Nootka Marine Adventures is proud to offer an inspiring outdoor learning program available to school groups of all ages.

Our primary mission is to promote a deep and lasting connection between youth and the natural world. Our Outdoor Education Program is engaging, educational and accessible: our series of workshops based out of Moutcha Bay Resort are designed to teach real-world skills and knowledge that can be applied throughout their lives.

Custom school group itineraries are available with any combination of workshops, skills sessions and fun outdoor adventures. Our education team will help to create the perfect itinerary for your school group goals.

Group Activities Hosted by Nootka Marine Adventures

  1. Marine Science Workshop
    Explore the ecosystems that support marine life. This 3-hour workshop introduces students to marine biology – Students make connections between the organisms that rely on our Pacific Ocean.  With a maximum of 20 students per workshop, students will have benefit from a hands-on, effective learning environment.
    Cost: $100/20 students
  2. Freshwater Science Workshop
    Explore our local freshwater ecosystems. This 3-hour workshop introduces students to freshwater biology which will include learning about the importance of healthy watersheds.  Students will engage in a variety of activities with a maximum of 20 people per workshop.
    Cost: $100/20 students
  3. Watercraft Skills
    In this 3-hour workshop, students learn the basics of marine safety and boat operation. Equipment, marine knots, navigation and operation techniques are covered.  Students will also get the chance to operate a motor-powered vessel.  We end each session learning some efficient crab harvesting techniques.  Students will work in groups of 4, allowing for each individual to benefit from focused instruction.

  4. Wilderness Skills
    Students will explore the skills and knowledge that prepares them to enjoy west coast wilderness. The basics of planning, navigation, wildlife awareness and ethical camping are all covered in this 3-hour workshop, through fun and interactive activities.
    Cost: $100/20 students
  5. Guided Saltwater Fishing
    We offer 5-hour half-day and 10-hour full-day guided fishing charters. Our professional and knowledgeable guides will give students the opportunity to fish some of the best fishing grounds British Columbia has to offer, while accommodating all experience levels.  Students will take away new found skills and fishing techniques and most importantly memories that will last a lifetime.

  6. Rental Boats
    Our 18’ aluminum Quay Craft boats are available to rent for both a 5-hour half day rental and a 10-hour full day rental. All rentals include a safety orientation and are equipped with VHF radios, safety equipment, fishing equipment, and basic tackle.

    Full day 18’ aluminum center console, 10 hours, $449

Additional Outdoor Adventures

  1. Hiking
    Explore several beautiful trails near Moutcha Bay Resort; including Leiner Estuary Trail, Leiner Boulder Trail, Conuma River.
  2. Caving
    Explore Upana Caves, a spectacular caving system, just a short drive from Moutcha Bay Resort. This provincial park site is a series of self-guided caves with well-manicured trails and appropriate for all ages. 
  3. Kayaking
    Explore Moutcha Bay and the Conuma River Estuary on our rental kayaks at no additional charge. There is plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities including sea life, birds, and little shoreline creatures, like mink marten. 
  4. Lakeshore Fishing
    Nearby Malaspina Lake is glacier fed, offering excellent opportunities to fish for trout. This lake is a recreation day-use site with a short trail leading to a sandy point on the south side of the lake.
  5. Salmon Hatchery
    The Conuma River Fish Hatchery provides guests with an overview of the local hatchery operations. Hatchery staff will guide all public tours and are approximately 30 minutes in length.  Tours must be booked in advance by calling the hatchery directly.

Rainforest Camping and Meals

Moutcha Bay Resort offers beautiful, tree-lined campsites which can comfortably accommodate up to 10 people per campsite.  Each campsite has a picnic table, fire ring, and water and power supply.  Washroom facilities are throughout the campground with sinks, flush toilets, and hot coin-operated showers. 
Nightly rate: $100 per site/10 students

Moutcha Bay Resort offers school groups a healthy meal plan which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day.  Meals are prepared by our resort chef and conveniently delivered to your campsite.
Daily rate: $30/person
