Event Information

The Kayak Fishing Derby has been taking place annually at Moutcha Bay Resort in Nootka Sound since 2004. This family-friendly event is designed to raise funds for salmon enhancement and habitat restoration projects within the Nootka Sound watershed.

In 2022, the two-day tournament will take place on August 27 & 28. In an effort to reduce our impact on large broodstock, there will be a variety of ways to win prizes over the weekend including an online auction, raffle prizes, and more.

The Kayak Derby will feature a variety of draws, raffles, silent auction and more – giving you multiple chances to take home some amazing prizes.

Sip 4 Salmon – The Conuma Grill will be serving up pints of cold “Islander Lager” from Vancouver Island Brewing (VIB)with proceeds going straight to the Nootka Sound Watershed Society. The Keg value will be donated by VIB to the Nootka Sound Watershed Society (NSWS) and all proceeds from each pint sold will be donated to the NSWS by Nootka Marine Adventures. All you have to do is visit the Conuma Grill, order a pint of VIB’s “Islander Lager” and that’s it! Join us and Sip 4 Salmon!

Live Entertainment

We are pleased to announce that CCMA award winning roots/rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Sean Hogan, will be joining us LIVE at the Conuma Grill on the Saturday night (August 27th, 2022)! The shows will kick off at 7:00pm on the Conuma Grill patio, right outside of the main lodge. This is a show that you won’t want to miss!

Our Purpose

Our Kayak Derby is designed to raise funds for salmon enhancement and habitat restoration within the Nootka Sound and Esperanza Inlet watersheds. Our goal is that by actively promoting and participating in these essential projects, we will bring awareness of the importance of environmental programs to the angling community. All of the net proceeds from this derby go toward the Nootka Sound Watershed Society and the Pacific Salmon Foundation.

The NSWS is a group of local community members including First Nations representatives, biologists, sport fishermen, industry representatives, and stewards with the common goal of working to protect, restore, and enhance Pacific salmon stocks in the Nootka Sound and Esperanza Inlet watersheds.

One of the many benefits of these family-friendly events is that we continue to see more young people developing a love for sport fishing and an appreciation for their environment.
