Event Information

The Kayak Fishing Derby has been taking place annually since 2004 at Moutcha Bay Resort in Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island. This family-friendly event is designed to raise funds for salmon enhancement and habitat restoration within the Nootka Sound watershed.

Our 2021 Kayak Derby at Moutcha Bay Resort will take place August 28 & 29, 2021. Tickets are available now! Tickets are $75/rod. Register and reserve your ticket today.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, our 2021 derby will be a hybrid event consisting partly of socially distanced, in-person components as well as fun virtual components. The health and safety of our guests and employees is our main priority. This year’s derby will not include large gatherings such as in-person awards ceremonies or live auctions, which will be moved instead to an online platform.

Our Purpose

Our Kayak Derby is designed to raise funds for salmon enhancement and habitat restoration within the Nootka Sound and Esperanza Inlet watersheds. Our goal is that by actively promoting and participating in these essential projects, we will bring awareness of the importance of environmental programs to the angling community. All of the net proceeds from this derby go toward the Nootka Sound Watershed Society and the Pacific Salmon Foundation.

One of the many benefits of these family-friendly events is that we continue to see more young people developing a love for sport fishing and an appreciation for their environment.

Nootka Sound Watershed Society

The NSWS is a group of local community members including First Nations representatives, biologists, sport fishermen, industry representatives, and stewards with the common goal of working to protect, restore, and enhance Pacific salmon stocks in the Nootka Sound and Esperanza Inlet watersheds.

Prizes & Sponsors

We want to give a huge thank you to our main Sponsor, Old Town Canoes & Johnson Outdoors.

Johnson Outdoors’ brands Ocean Kayaks and Old Town Canoe, produce some of the most innovative and user-friendly kayaks on the market – just ask our marina team or check them out on our kayak racks. Their fishing kayaks feature ultra-stable Double-U hulls that provide smooth stability whether you like to fish sitting down or standing up. Speaking of sitting – their fully adjustable premium seating will keep you comfortable all day.

Ask our team why we love our Ocean Kayaks and Old Town Canoe kayaks, or come try them out for yourself at our Moutcha Bay Resort Marina!

West Coast Kayak Angler Series

The West Coast Kayak Angler Series was developed in 2019 to promote the sport of Kayak Angling on Vancouver Island and provide a way of growing an active community and introduce others to the sport. Our events are open to all human powered watercraft (kayak, canoe, float tube, row boat, paddleboard, pontoon boat, etc.) with the goal of encouraging families to participate and to educate about the local fisheries.
