Fishing on Vancouver Island

The waters off the coast of Vancouver Island are not only gorgeous but contain incredibly rich biodiversity. Humpback whales, orcas, dolphins, porpoises, seals, and sea-lions all come to feed on the plentiful supply of fish in these abundant oceans. Sport fishermen have been drawn to Vancouver Island for the same reason, the waters are full of trophy-sizes fish that are just too good to pass up.

Best Fish Spots on Vancouver Island

Incredible fishing opportunities can be found in many places on Vancouver Island and the surround waters and inlets but there are a few of our favourites

  • Nootka Sound and Esperanza Inlet
  • Ucluelet
  • Winter Harbour
  • Haida Gwaii
  • Port Renfrew

Caving

Perfect for families or experienced cavers. Explore the five caves on a self-guided tour, all accessible by a short trail. Bring at least two sources of light and sturdy footwear as the caves are dimly lit and often damp. The well-maintained day use site is easily accessed from Moutcha Bay Resort heading toward the village of Gold River. Turn right at H-27 and park in front of the bridge. The trailhead is on the other side of the bridge which will lead you into the park.

Wander through old-growth Western white pine, Western hemlock and yellow cedar trees (some over 200 years old!). Enjoy viewing the stunning waterfall from the viewing area or take in the energy of the Resurgence Cave from the designated viewing platform where the river flows out of the cave and back to the surface. Don’t forget your camera!

ATV Trails

Explore the Nootka Sound area by ATV on one of our many purpose-built trails and logging roads, many of which are within minutes from Moutcha Bay Resort. A local favourite is the trail near the Canton River – drive West along Head Bay Road and turn right once you cross the Canton River bridge. Follow the road upward until you reach the breathtaking scenic views of Nootka Sound.

Star Lake

Visit Star Lake near the village of Gold River for its set of ATV trails – and maybe a swim off the floating pier, too! From Gold River, head South on Ucona Road for 5.5km to the Star Lake entrance. The recreation site is surrounded by back-country forest. Picnic tables are available.

A Little Piece of Heaven

A truly hidden gem off the beaten track. I would highly recommend Moutcha Bay resort to anyone looking for an idyllic escape! Already booked again for next year!
